In automatic systems, including gate automatic opening/closing systems, it is important to take care of their safe operation, in this case, safety is understood not as refusals, but as minimizing the possibility of injuring its users or their property. Only properly installed systems guarantee this. One technique is to use light (infrared) barriers. An interruption of the light beam indicates a non-compliance with a normal natural cycle (for example, a person under a barrier) and usually the automation reacts to this by interrupting the work cycle.

When installing barriers, infrared light-modulated beam barriers are usually used. The infrared light beam is relatively easy to obtain, the light intensities used are not dangerous to human health (unlike the laser beam), it is easy to separate it from the disturbing background light. A modulated light beam can be easily separated from the background light using different modulation frequencies, multiple beams can be used in the same direction.

Photo barriers are most often used to break the auto-close cycle. If the closing cycle does not take place, first of all, it is necessary to check the operation of the photo barrier - when it is covered, the operation of the relay should be heard. Photo rays can be conveniently used for counting moving objects and determining their direction of movement.
